Stosur into Stuttgart quarters
Samantha Stosur won her second-round match at the WTA tournament in Stuttgart on Thursday but was made to play three sets.
Stosur survived a first set scare before she rallied to beat Romania’s Alexandra Dulgheru 3-6 6-0 6-2 in her second-round match.
“I don’t think I played as well as I did yesterday, but she also played a lot different to the way Marion [Bartoli] played and made me work for it,” said Stosur.
“I think she’s a good player, a good competitor and plays pretty well on clay.”
The seventh-seed looked in trouble in the first, but roared back in the second and third to blow away her opponent. A comeback the world No.10 attributed to patience.
“[In the second set] I wasn’t trying to hit a winner off the second or third ball. [I tried to] hit maybe four, five balls in to make her possibly miss and maybe she had to go for it and change her gameplan a little bit.
“A little bit of a change but overall a better attitude and I tried to stay positive.”
The win sets up a quarterfinal clash with China’s Li Na on Friday.
“She’s been playing quite well recently and she got to the top 10 recently as well, so we’ve both got that in common and I know that it’s going to be a tough match.
“I’m going to have to play well.”
