Sam set for Sydney International

Sam Stosur will be among a record six Grand Slam champions set to star at the Sydney International women’s event in January 2018.

Stosur, the 2011 US Open champion, was announced on Monday alongside two-time major winner Angelique Kerber for the WTA field.

The duo will join seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams, two-time Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitova, and reigning Roland Garros and US Open champions Jelena Ostapenko and Sloane Stephens respectively.

Ranked No.41 in the world, local favourite Stosur won one WTA title in 2017 in Strasbourg – beating fellow Australian Daria Gavrilova in three sets – before a stress fracture in her right hand, suffered at the French Open, derailed her season.

“I am really looking forward to playing again in Sydney,” said Stosur.

“The 2017 season was injury interrupted for me so I’m relishing the thought of starting the year at home after a good pre-season.

“Sydney usually has a strong field but this year is outstanding given the number of Grand Slam champions confirmed. We’re all there because we want the best preparation possible for the Australian Open and that’s what we’ll get at Olympic Park.

“There are no easy matches in Sydney so I know I have to be ready to go straight away.”

Stosur is making her 12th appearance at her home tournament. Her best results were reaching the final in 2005 and the quarterfinals in 2016.
