Sam ousted in Rome first round

Sam Stosur has gone down at the first hurdle of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia, losing a three-setter to Alison Van Uytvanck.

Stosur took the first set in a tense tiebreak before the Belgian recovered to win 6-7(6) 6-3 6-2.

The Australian was a wildcard into the Rome event, where she made the final in 2011. Yet in the past four years the tournament has not been a happy ground; she’s fallen in the first round in three of those visits.

Van Uytvanck – who won two rounds of qualifying to reach the main draw – will next face second seed Caroline Wozniacki.

Stosur, meanwhile, will next head to Strasbourg, where she is the defending champion.
