Puig sends Sam out of Miami Open
Late on Wednesday night (local time), Sam Stosur fell to Monica Puig in straight sets under lights at Stadium 1 at the Miami Open.
Stosur committed 26 unforced errors in windy conditions, and was broken three times throughout the match to lose 6-3 6-4.
The Puerto Rican, who lives in Miami, goes on to face No.2 seed Caroline Wozniacki in the second round.
After winning their first four meetings – all in straight sets – Stosur has lost the last three to Puig, including in the first round of this year’s Australian Open.
Stosur remains alive in the doubles competition, and with fellow Aussie Daria Gavrilova will take on the wildcard pairing of Victoria Azarenka and Aryna Sabalenka.
Her next singles outing will be on the green clay courts of Charleston, a tournament she won in 2010.
