Mladenovic stops Sam at Indian Wells

Sam Stosur has exited the joint WTA/ATP tournament at Indian Wells after a hard-fought match against France’s Kristina Mladenovic.

Stosur fell 7-5 7-5 to the No.14 seed, who goes on to face China’s Wang Qiang in the third round.

A late break in the second set gave Mladenovic the chance to serve for the match, which she did at her first opportunity to seal victory in exactly two hours.

Stosur came into the match with a 4-0 winning head-to-head record over Mladenovic, but found the resurgent Frenchwoman too strong on Friday afternoon (local time).

The pair had not met since 2015; Mladenovic last year reached the Roland Garros quarterfinals and went on to crack the world’s top 10.

Stosur remains alive in doubles, and later on Friday will team with fellow Aussie Daria Gavrilova to face No.1 seeds Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina.
