Sam's introduction to tennis at eight years of age was a lucky one when a friend gave her a tennis racquet for a Christmas present. She and her brother Daniel used to go down to the local courts and hit a few balls together. It wasn't long before he realised Sam's potential and convinced their parents to take her to get a few lessons.
Sam went away on her first overseas trip when she was 13 to compete in the World Youth Cup tournament in Jakarta, Indonesia.
At 14 Sam was included in the Queensland Academy of sport (QAS) and at 16 the Australian Institute of sport.(AIS)
Sam teamed up with Craig Morris when she first started playing on the WTA tour. Craig has played a huge part in Sam's tennis both on the court and off as a close personal friend.
Sam is currently without a full time coach.
In her down time, she enjoys being with friends, surfing and listening to music. Now residing in Tampa Florida, Sam considers herself "happy" and "easy going."
