Sam’s Osaka blog

Hi All,

Sorry it has been so long between blogs. The Asian swing has not gone to plan for me and I’m looking forward to finishing the year on a high. Doha is the last tournament on my playing calendar.  I arrived today from Osaka at 5:30am and I’m struggling to stay awake tonight.

Today I hit once on centre court with a young local tennis player. Dave arrives from Australia tomorrow so I think he will be very tired so I have booked in two practices, let’s hope he gets through it!

Photos: My Osaka tour

Today was a very dry heat, it felt like there was a hair dryer blowing in my eyes but I remember from last year it can also be humid.

Vera and myself are the only players here so far but I’m guessing the rest of the singles girls will arrive tomorrow. Very different feeling at this tournament as there is only eight singles and four doubles teams. No fighting over lockers or practice courts this week. :)
Doha is quite the opposite to Osaka with the amount of people and the choice of restaurants. Going out for dinner and exploring the city was the highlight of my day in Osaka. I have always loved travelling to Japan. I think everyone should try a tuna triangle from one of the convenience stores located on every corner. (Lawsons and Family Mart are my favourites) Here are a few photos from Osaka.

Take care,
Sam

Hi Sammy , it's nice to see you write on blog again , especially just before your great war , hope you will adapt to the weather in local as soon as possible .
By the way , those convience stores in my country (Taiwan) , they also offer many tuna triangles which had been a long time to be my breakfast , maybe it's because of the same condition for pacific island I think , I feel fantastic that you love it too . : )

Hey Sam, thanks for taking the time to give us this blog. It's always great to read these personal messages from you, and with all of us really excited about your first run at Doha (but not nearly as excited as you I bet) this one is extra special. As you said the last few weeks have not gone quite as you would have liked, but in retrospect that is understandable after such an exciting but exhausting year for you. Don't worry, the other girls will also be feeling much the same, it's been a very long year for everyone. Just give it your all, enjoy the moment and good things will come Sam. Supporting you always!

  • Drine

Yay!!! It's so nicet to read you again, it's been so long indeed. It's always interesting to have the feelings of the players about the site, the matches, the atmosphere and to know what they're doing off court :)
You must be super motivated for the last tournament of the year, it's a great opportunity to finish the season on a high note. Thanks for sharing your pics, enjoy your time in Doha, have fun and good luck for your matches!!!
Can't wait to see you play now!!! GO SAM!!!

Hi, Sammy! Thanks for the blog and photos. Photos that you upload is always great. Glad that you find time not only for tennis. More so, to spend time in Japan.

This is a happy nation that lives in harmony with yourself and nature. These pagodas and temples are truly magnificent. In my opinion, this is one of the best countries to live (well, of course, after Australia :)). Thanks, Sam, for what you can share a part of their preferences and impressions about countries. So, I hope that now you're inspired and filled up useful Japanese food is ready for a serious fight on the court in Doha.

Main thing quickly get used to the crazy heat, which will be for the during tournament. I wish you only the easy wins in Doha. I believe in you and know that you can do it. You can win every match, Sam. Whatever tense it was. You have repeatedly proven it this year. You're a truly great athlete. I never get tired of proud and admire your talent and will to win. Good luck, baby! Love you.

  • LankyDes

Thanks for the blog Sam. You look beautiful as ever. Good luck for next week. You can beat them all on your day

Thanks for the update Sam on how things are going :) Doesn't matter to me when you do your blogs, even if you do them months later. Most important thing is you concentrate on what you do best. I'm glad that you're still optimistic about your chances in Doha despite the recent poor Asian swing. Glad you took something enjoyable out of your time in Osaka, which helps you relax & to forget about the tennis. At least I know where to get a quick breaky from when I'm in Japan one day ;)

All the best in Doha, & just play your game like you always do. Smash 'em Sam!!!

    Take Care

  • Sarah

Hi Sam,thanks for the blog and pics.I'm glad that you had a fun in Osaka.I like Osaka castle, the down

view from the top is nice…If you have a chance, I think, you should climb Mt.Fuji someday. It's really nice to watch the sun rise from the top of the mountain. It's really fantastic ;)

Good luck in Doha, enjoy your last tournament of the season!

  • ben.j.

Nice blog. The dry heat sounds great! I'm sure you'll handle these conditions better than anyone else. Finish strong!

  • ben.j.

I agree with the Mt Fuji comment. I think it is especially good if you start right from the bottom, instead of catching the bus half way up as most people do. It's a bit hard to find the start of the trail and it takes a lot longer, but it's beautiful and really worth it.

  • Jarek

Hi Sam, great match against Francesca. Congratulation! Just win this event, you're the best! I cross my fingers…just go out and play.

  • Manel

I hope you'll win in Brisbane in January
You can be the best next year !

Do not agree with your decision to support Mcain’s Healthy choice frozen meals – but as the saying goes, if you pay an athlete enough they will tell you anything.

Sam, I read in Tennis Magazine that you have a fear of flying even though you have to fly all the time. I had the same issues. I found a website that offers wonderful help with this. It is fearofflying.com. I hope it helps you as much as it did me! Valerie

    Sear Sam,

Your victory this morning has made everone in Australia so proud.

You have always conducted yourself in the most dignified & humble manner but inside there is a heart of a lion.

I know you measure your career by your acheivments but as you are one of the most popular Australian sportpeople ever in an reflection of the wonderful person you are.

Congratulations on your US Open victory – there is no more deserving person

  • Sophpete

Sam, great win at the US Open!!  It was a pleasure to see you playing live.  I am sorry that your win was marred by Serena’s antics on the court and the commentators persistant reference to one point.  You played great and deserved to win.  The US needs women players like you and Kim C who are great sports on the court and good examples for those up and coming.  While I love my country, I typically cheer for the players who show the better sportsmanship on the court and on the women’s side, that is usually a non-American.  Great match, congratulations!!

  • Stratetect

All i can say is huge congrats to you.  No man has any right to feel anything other than compleete awe at your achievments.  You are strong, talented, stunningly beautiful, smart and together.  I not only admire you but I have respect for you and you skill and strength.  Just be you please. it is a huge example to me and my sons. If i had ever met a woman as balanced or as strong as you, i would be a very different man today. you are an inspiration to all.

  • Stratetect

ahh, simply the finest woman ever.
